ITS World Congress โ€“ Review

I just returned from ITS World Congress, which was a great opportunity to meet old friends, make new contacts and get a first-hand update about latest development. Here are some of my observations from this year's show:




๐—œ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ: It's not new that data is "the new gold" in our industry and we already saw a large number of new data players and solutions at previous shows. In L.A. this number has further increased. Here are a few examples: Google's public sector division was presenting data and analytics tools for traffic management & planning purposes, WSP USA proposed concepts regarding how RUC data could be used to improve road safety and to enhance mobility, GEOTAB's ITS division demoed its traffic insights platform based on connected car data coming from Geotab's fleet customers, SWARCO announced a partnership with MicroTraffic Road Safety Video Analytics to enhance its traffic management solution by integrating MicroTraffic's road safety video analytics platform, or wejo presenting its data mart with connected car data from all major OEM brands.


๐—ฉ๐Ÿฎ๐—ซ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต: Introduction of this technology has been delayed by lengthy discussions about the right base technology (ITS-G5 vs. C-V2X), business models, security architectures etc. Now we are entering the roll-out phase and both OEMs as well as road operators are starting to deploy this key technology helping to increase road safety and allowing more advanced traffic management use cases. At ITS World Congress it was clear that more and more ITS vendors have ready-to-use solutions for V2X. V2X technology vendors like Commsignia showcased for example how vulnerable users (pedestrians, bikes, scooters) could be added to the picture, Iteris, Inc. added V2X capability to their roadside sensor products, and ATMS vendors like Kapsch TrafficCom AG, SWARCO, Yunex Traffic etc. offer end-to-end solutions comprising V2X RSUs, as well as traffic management software suites supporting V2X use cases.


๐—œ๐—ง๐—ฆ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜-๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐˜€ "๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ": Last year at the ITS World Congress in Hamburg most ATMS start-ups were still somewhere hidden in small boothes off the main corridors or were present with a small table in the start-up corner. This year some of the "new kids on the block" like NoTraffic or Miovision were center stage and had some of the biggest stands at this year's show. It's great to see such new players are growing and becoming serious actors in the industry.


๐—›๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ณ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฎ๐˜€ โ˜น: It was a pity that the IBTTA annual meeting and the NPA parking convention in Austin Texas were on at the same time as the ITS WC, with the result that most visitors and many vendors had to decide where to go. Next time it would be great if organizers could maybe talk to each other when planning their events โ€ฆ
